Central Jersey’s Haven for Songwriters, Music Lovers
By Dale Lakata

Here’s a great piece of news for all music lovers in the area. There’s a place where you can sample the best original local talent up close and personal at Raritan’s Decicco’s.

Every Wednesday night since October of 2007, Nasty Ned and JR Bradfield have hosted "Writers in Raritan", a songwriter showcase where an evening devoted to the artist's songs is the focus.

“The Writers in Raritan (WiR) goal is to help audiences better connect with live music by focusing on the song and the artist who crafts the song. There are no drums, band or accompanying players,” says Bradfield. “We wanted to give listeners a chance to get closer to the song,” says WiR host Nick Petti, who goes by the stage name “Nasty Ned”.

Decicco’s has a warm, intimate setting complete with a small group of tables, comfy bar stools and brick walls where you can listen to a selection of styles which conform to the genre “Indie Music” from the classic rock styling’s of Christine Martucci to the Elvis Costello-like sound of Keith Monacchio to the “americana/alternative-country sound – like the Byrd’s in a modern setting” of John Powers.

I met John the other evening and he told me he was proud to have opened the very first night in the series. “It’s amazing how many artists want to share their music and play for the community, Powers said.” This is true, WiR is booked through April.

“This whole evening was developed on myspace,” says Ned. “ I met many of the artists who contacted me through the myspace page (www.myspace.com/writersinraritan ), but also knew and have played with some and invited them to perform as well, and the base of performers just keeps growing.” WiR is a spin-off of American Roots Live. American Roots Live is another great eve of music featurning showcased acts and open jam every Thursday and Sunday at Orphan Annie’s in Stirling. The my space page is www.myspace.com/americanroots.

Nasty Ned and JR Bradfield co-host Writers in Raritan every Wednesday at Decicco’s in Raritan at 10 Anderson Street (no cover) from 8:30 to midnight. Four artists are booked each week to perform their original songs solo without accompanying players.

WiR features an array of artists from Jersey’s vast and incredible pool of talent. Here, songwriters perform intimate acoustic sets each week.

Performers at WiR have included: JR Bradfield, John Powers, The Williamsboy, Bruce Jepson, Peter Prasa, Robert Ross, George Wirth, Tommy Fuller, Shelli Aarden, Melissa Anthony, Michael Brett, Jo Wymer, Aster Pheonyx, Robert Zee, Kerry Anderson, Jim Popik, Chuck Shaeffer, Keith Monacchio, Kevin Reavey, John Kasper, Sarah Donner, Christine Martucci, Ken Shane, Jessica Paris, Gerry Perlinski, Dennis Macarone, Corey Small, Frank Victor, Vincent Inciong, Pete Carril, Kelly Carvin, Scott Thomas Webster and more.

Besides coming in to play, many of the performers frequent this evening as audience members as well in support of this growing music community in the heart of Somerset County.

As a transplanted Monmouth County singer-songwriter myself, I am hoping to share the stage one evening and will continue to stop in to check out the wealth of great music featured.

The music of the show's host, a singer and songwriter himself and formerly of the 90's band Nasty Ned and the Famous Chili Dogs, has been described as “Original rockin' blues and swing as well as soul drenched ballads…” by Richard Skelly in a 1998 review in US 1 News.

Nasty Ned is a true veteran performer who continues to play at area festivals and clubs throughout New Jersey. Co-host JR Bradfield has traveled the world during the 90’s playing the Caribbean, Mexico, North Africa and the USA.

Here’s a chance right here in the area to get your musical fix and to support our area's own musical community. Check out Writers in Raritan on Wednesdays, have a bite, a beer and listen and enjoy some of New Jersey’s best talent.

"The Deal" just added - July 21, 2006

Here's a new song for you to check out. I'm so glad we've got so many listening to the site, folks from all over the globe! We had over 1000 hits in July! The Deal is just added though I wrote this while at a club in Asbury Park in 1997 (the club's called The Saint). I met someone who had a story for me about his "deal" and then I proceeded to hear other stories which made me come up with the idea for the song.
